Job Overview
Position: IGCSE & A Level Chemistry Teacher
Reports to Principal/Head of Secondary and Head of Science
Works collaboratively with teachers, students, and other members of the student support team.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITY (Main purpose of this job):
A chemistry teacher is part of a team of educators in the science department working together to
provide the best learning environment for students and will:
• Keep open lines of communication with students, parents, teachers, administrators, support
staff and fellow instructional assistants.
• Prepare students for IGCSE and AS/A Level exams.
• Respect confidentiality and privacy of information related to students and the workplace.
• Be flexible and willing to perform duties outside the specific scope of their job description.
• Participate in school activities such as staff meetings, social functions and other school activities.
• Attend professional learning and training sessions.
• Maintain levels of professional conduct and dress appropriately as a representative of the NBIS
community.
RESPONSIBILITIES (Key areas of responsibility):
• Maintain a familiarity with the Cambridge curriculum as it pertains to the chemistry teacher’s
assignment.
• Contribute to the development of the department's curriculum and resources.
• Develop and implement lesson plans that strictly follow the Cambridge syllabus guidelines.
• Set and mark homework and tests in accordance with departmental policies.
• Teach and assist students with completing assigned tasks and classwork (including practical
work).
• Prepare and deliver regular, safe, practical experiments for IGCSE and A-Level students.
• Adapt and differentiate materials for EAL and SEN students.
• Monitor student progress towards set learning goals and provide feedback, and guidance and
reinforce taught concepts where necessary.
• Provide science-related extra-curricular activities for students.
• Maintain a safe and organized chemistry laboratory.
• Assist in the ordering of laboratory equipment and chemicals for the science department.
• Assist in ensuring chemicals are stored according to local government regulations.
Social and behavioural support
• Provide social and behavioural support, evidenced by fostering a respectful, positive, safe,
student-centred environment that is conducive to learning.
• Assist with safe transitions and supervision of students.
• Supervise, observe and encourage positive student behaviour in a developmentally appropriate
way and in keeping with the values of our school.
• Supervise students during field trips and at school assemblies.
• Assist with duties as required.
• Maintain regular dialogue with the head of the department regarding student academic progress
and behaviour.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
• Fluent in English and Chinese.
• Bachelor’s degree in a chemistry-related subject.
• Qualified teacher preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of recent successful teaching experience with IGCSE and A Level Chemistry,
preferably in an international school.
• Familiarity with the British education system.
• Experience in teaching EAL students.
• Excellent skills in the preparation and teaching of practical experiments and techniques,
particularly at A Level.
• Demonstrated experience in inspiring students in a stimulating learning environment.
• Demonstrated experience in raising achievement and setting challenging targets.
• Excellent organisational skills.
• Evidence of participation in regular professional development.
